Self Help Credit Repair

Excellent TIP #1: Never EVER just pay off a collections or past due without getting in writing upfront that if you pay the item off, the creditor and/or the collections agency will agree to DELETE the entire matter from your credit reports.

Excellent TIP #2: Never EVER pay via "check by phone" or give your personal bank information to a creditor or collections agency. Some companies have been know to later go back into your into your account just for good measure to get additional interest, fees or penalties. As a basic step to repairing your credit you decide you should, could and will make a "settlement" payment to a creditor or collections agency you should first always negotiate for less, and then use a bank's certified check to do so. And, also on the back of that certified check below the signature line write: "By cashing this check, you accept this settlement as payment in full, will stop all collection activity and will DELETE this entire record from my credit profiles." That smart language is called a "Restrictive Endorsement Agreement" and is enforceable in court in all 50 states and more importantly with the credit agencies.

It's critical here that you get it DELETED; not just showing PAID IN FULL on your credit reports. If late accounts suddenly show up as paid in full, its now a negative history, (because it was paid late) that will now result in lower credit scores for 7 years from the time of newest activity, which is to say from the time you just made that payment.
